Should I DIY My Bathroom Faucet Installation?
You depend on your faucet for drinking water, bathing, and washing dishes. But when it stops working properly, you need to act fast to avoid the spread of mold or the growth of rust. And if you've never tried installing a faucet before, DIYing may sound like an attractive option, until you take into account the risk of injury and the cost of repairs.
This blog will help you decide whether your faucet installation project is worth tackling by yourself or whether it would be better to hire a professional plumber.
Is There A Leak?
Bathroom faucets can be temperamental, and they may suddenly stop working on their own for any number of reasons. Before you replace the faucet, make sure it's not an issue with the pipes or the water line inside your walls. If you're unsure whether you should call a plumber to replace your faucet, take a look at these symptoms to help determine whether there is a leak:
- You hear a sound like dripping water when all of your water sources have been turned off
- Your sink fills with water but doesn't drain
- Your faucet drips continuously
- You are unable to turn the faucet on, even after waiting for several minutes
If you experience any of these symptoms, investigate the problem right away by taking the following steps:
- Turn off all of your water sources so that your pipes don't get wet. Also, turn off the hose nozzle attached to the hose attached to the faucet, if applicable
- Use a pair of pliers to remove the stopper from your faucet by turning the handle counterclockwise. If you don't have a pair of pliers, you can also use a wrench to turn the handle clockwise until the stopper is free
- Open each of your faucets one by one and take a look inside. If you see water dripping out from within, there may be a leak somewhere in the system
If the faucet appears to be dripping, but you cannot turn it on, and no evident leak can be located, you may want to call a plumber to inspect your faucet for any possible damage or issues.
Should You DIY Or Hire A Professional?
If your bathroom sink is leaking, there is no doubt that you should consider hiring a plumber to fix things. As with any plumbing job, there are two main reasons why you shouldn't DIY your bathroom faucet installation:
- The plumber has the necessary professional expertise to ensure that your sink is properly installed
- You won't have to worry about being injured by tools or water - a bathroom is a small area, and the last thing you want to do is cut yourself or your clothes on sharp edges or on pipes that have been improperly installed
